Australia's nuclear hypocrisy: we ban it at home but profit from selling it abroad

The cost-and-timeline defence has aged badly
The standard defence of the ban leans on cost and timeline. Nuclear plants are expensive to build and take a decade or more to commission, the argument goes, so they cannot contribute to Australia's 2030 or even 2050 emissions targets. There is something to this. New large-scale nuclear in countries like the United Kingdom and Finland has run significantly over budget and behind schedule. These are real costs, and honest analysis has to account for them.
But the argument has grown stale in ways its proponents have not fully absorbed. Small modular reactors, a technology still maturing but advancing rapidly, promise shorter construction timelines and lower upfront capital than traditional gigawatt-scale plants. Several OECD countries are actively licensing them. South Korea, which generates roughly 30 per cent of its electricity from nuclear, has among the lowest electricity costs and lowest grid-emissions intensity in the developed world. France, which generates around 70 per cent from nuclear, has structural electricity costs that Australian households would find difficult to imagine. Meanwhile, Canada — another large, dispersed country with a commodity-export economy not unlike Australia's — is investing in both existing nuclear capacity and next-generation designs.
None of this proves nuclear is the right answer for Australia. The grid integration challenges are real, the regulatory infrastructure does not exist, and a serious buildout would take decades to pay off. But "not the right answer" is a different conclusion from "so dangerous or unprincipled that we must forbid it by law while simultaneously supplying the fuel to everyone else."
The ban is not a safety judgment, an environmental judgment, or a nonproliferation judgment
That is the contradiction at the centre of the policy, and it matters because it reveals what the ban actually is. It is not a safety judgment — Australia operates the OPAL research reactor at Lucas Heights, which produces nuclear medicine used in hospitals across the country and the region. It is not an environmental judgment — uranium mining has a land-use footprint, but no honest accounting puts it above coal. And it is plainly not a nonproliferation judgment, given that we export uranium to India, which has not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, under a bilateral safeguards agreement.

Questioning it has become culturally coded as being on one particular side of the climate debate, which is its own kind of absurdity given that nuclear is one of the lowest-lifecycle-emissions sources of electricity that exists.
What Australia actually loses is the ability to have an honest conversation
What Australia loses by maintaining the prohibition is not just a hypothetical power source. It is the ability to have an honest public conversation about what decarbonisation actually requires. The moment nuclear is declared legally off-limits, the debate about the grid's long-term architecture becomes artificially constrained. That constraint does not make the hard engineering problems go away — it just ensures we approach them with one hand behind our back, while profiting from selling the fuel to countries that kept both hands free.
There is a version of Australia's energy future in which nuclear plays no role because renewables, storage and transmission solve the problem first and at lower cost. That outcome is possible. But it should be the result of economic and engineering analysis, not a legislative prohibition enacted when John Howard was prime minister and before the first iPhone existed.
The India deal has given Pauline Hanson a rhetorical gift, and she has taken it. But the underlying point does not require her to make it. The hypocrisy is structural, not partisan. Australia has decided it is acceptable to profit from nuclear power everywhere except here. That position deserves a better justification than it has ever been given.
